Which Piece On The Chessboard Are You?

What comes to mind when you hear the word leadership? If you are like most people, you think about the business or corporate world. But the world of leadership spans more areas. You can be the leader in a church group, your family, your school, etc.

Imagine a large chessboard. Now consider you are a piece on this chessboard. Are you a pawn, moving slowly forward with little choice and at the mercy of other, more powerful pieces?

Or are you a knight, able to take risks and attack but with little concern for your own safety? Perhaps you are a bishop, able to move rapidly but constrained to a diagonal path from which you may not deviate. Or you may think of yourself as a rook, solid an safe but not very adventurous. A king? He is very important but requires other pieces to serve and defend him, which leaves the queen, highly flexible, adaptable, and able to move in any direction.

Do you know who you should be?

You should be sick and tired of being a piece of wood and pushed around a board by someone else!

Andrew Bryant penned these words. He is the number one global authority on self-leadership and co-author of the book, Self-Leadership: How To Become A More Successful, Efficient, and Effective Leader From the Inside Out with Ana Kazan, Ph.D.

The first time I read it-it blew me away.

What if instead of thinking about leadership in relation to others, you were to concentrate on the leadership you can take within your own life? What would that look like?

How many times have you found yourself doing something, thinking something, or being something based on what others wanted?

I have one client who shared with me that she was excited about going to college only because that's what others expected of her. Instead, she was feeling anxious and uncertain about her next step.

Do you feel like your life is leading you?

Do you feel overwhelmed and overworked?

Do you want to achieve greater success in your life?

Do you want to make a greater impact on others?

Guess what? I have great news for you. You are the leader of your life, and self-leadership is the key to each one.

Self-leadership is taking responsibility for your own life. Self-leadership comes from a place of not blaming others when you don't achieve your goals and objectives but realize that it is you who holds all the cards in your life.

Here are three steps to begin your journey to leading yourself.

1) Self-awareness: Self-leadership emerges from awareness. If you have been following me for any length of time, you know that I am an advocate of self-awareness.

2) Focus of what matters: I will be the first one to admit that it is difficult to block out all the outside voices telling you how to live your life. Everyone has an opinion of what they think you should do. It's easy to sit in the back seat and tell the driver how to drive. Right? But at the end of the day, it's the driver that's driving the car. The same thing applies to your life. You are the driver of your life.

3) Tune in: Listen to that still small voice that you hear deep inside of you. Everyone has it. It doesn't matter what higher power you believe in, God or the Universe. For me, it's the Holy Spirit who guides me. My point is, tune into that still small voice because that voice is going to connect you exactly where you need to be. The still small voice will guide you and lead you in the direction you are supposed to go.

Now, which piece on the chessboard are you?

What if instead of thinking about leadership in relation to others, you were to concentrate on the leadership you can take within your own life? What would that look like?

What is one step you can take today to become the driver of your life?

Are you tired of listening to what others tell you they think you should do? Are you ready to step out and step into the driver's seat of your life, but you're not sure what to do? I know what you're going through. I have been there myself. Who better to help you than someone who has been there and now is in the driver seat of her life?
