What's Holding You Back?
In 2008, I finished up my master's degree in exercise science and health promotions. I had a passion in my heart for fitness and helping women. God gave me a vision for a wellness concept, and I was excited about my impending adventure.
The house we built had a gym and a large living room/kitchen like are where I could personally train clients and conduct meetings and workshops. In 2009, I retired from the Army. Now the plan was that I would get a job and build a personal training business on the side. I got a job as a recreation specialist/facilities manager at the fitness center on the base. I was so excited. This was going to be perfect.
I started working, but every time I thought about stepping out and starting my wellness business, I would stop. I would come up with some reason why I couldn't. And guess what? I never did.
I realize that I allowed one thing to hold me back.
How about you?
Do you think about the dream you have for your future? Do you think about the steps you want to take to get you there but every time you start to move forward you stop? Something keeps holding you back from creating a life that means something to you on your terms.
What held me back from the vision God gave me? It was ME!
What’s holding you back from creating a life that means something to you on your terms? You!
We impoverish our lives. We stop ourselves from living our best lives. We allow our minds to stop us in our tracks.
Four deep and powerful energy blocks hold you back from creating a life that means something to you on your terms. This month I am going to break each one of them down and share some tips with you to help you move past them.
The first energy block: Limiting Beliefs.
Limiting beliefs are often about yourself and your self-identity. However, they can also be beliefs you have about the world, about other people, about situations, and about life in general that hold you back from success. They stop you from getting what you want. If you do not believe something is possible, you are not likely to attempt it. Even if you do try it, you won't devote much energy to achieving that goal.
Limiting beliefs form through your repeated thoughts. Over time you have collected evidence to support their truth. What you don't realize is that a majority of these beliefs are not true. The only reason they hold any weight is because you have decided they are true.
Limiting beliefs are often driven by fear.
Here are some examples of limiting beliefs:
I'll get hurt if I allow my real self to be seen.
Showing emotion is a sign of weakness.
All love has to be earned.
Helping others my duty.
Others' opinions of me are more important than my opinion of myself.
Because I am broken I am less valuable.
What limiting beliefs are holding you back?
Take some time to list some of the beliefs you have that you believe may be limiting you in any way.
Now for each one of the limiting beliefs, you have to ask yourself the following questions:
How true is that belief?
What evidence do you have to support that belief? (Look for proof or lack of proof of its truth.)
Where did you get that idea from?
How has this belief affected me? Explore the effect the belief has had on your life.
What is the cost of the belief to myself and others?
Do you struggle with limiting beliefs? It's okay! You're okay! We all do. I would love the opportunity to help you remove those limiting beliefs and embrace more positive thoughts about yourself and your life.
