What Got You Here Won't Keep You Here
Last week I was planning and creating my social media for this week. One of the tasks involved in this is to check my Instagram Audience Insights. I don't know if you have an Instagram account or are even remotely interested in your audience insights, but for me, this is very important. Insights allow me to see who my audience is and when they engage with me so I can plan my weekly posts. See what got me here isn’t going to keep me here.
I don't know about you, but the dreams I'm chasing, there are some skills and training I need to get myself there. Six months ago, I didn't have the skills I needed to get me where I am today. I knew that and I took the time to invest in myself, so I could get where I wanted to be.
The same goes for you. The dreams you have for yourself one year, three years, five years from now, you don't have the skills to get there yet. You have to invest in yourself to get to where you want to be.
There are many ways to invest in yourself. But here are three ways you can start.
1. Develop your skills. You want to expand your level of knowledge and skills. Go back to school for a higher degree or certification. Or attend a workshop, webinar, conference, or seminar. Read books, articles, white papers, or anything that is industry-specific.
Another excellent tool for developing your skills is joining an industry-specific association. Associations offer their members opportunities for professional development, and
they are an excellent tool for networking.
2. Tap into your creativity. Exploring ways to be creative helps you grow personally and professionally. Creativity comes in many forms. It's about trying something new and tapping into parts of your mind you haven't be tapping into yet.
Stretch yourself out of your comfort zone and learn something new like a new language or how to cook. Already know how to cook? Take a professional cooking class or try a new recipe.
One of my favorite ways to be creative is to write. Write anything: a poem, a short story, a book. Start a blog.
The world is your oyster. The key here is to push your personal and professional boundaries and learn something new.
3. Nurture your mind and body. Where you're heading is going to need a different kind of mind and body than you have now. You may need to have more energy, strength, or better health.
Nurture your mind through reading. Step outside your regular reading material into something new. Explore other cultures through museums or cultural events. Open your mind by engaging with others who don't think like you. Be willing to see different perspectives. You don't have to agree with it.
Nurture your body by eating food that blesses your body. Take time to step away from the busyness of life to rest and relax. Take a nap, try yoga, spend time meditating, or in prayer.
You don't have to spend a lot of money to invest in yourself. However, because you are the best investment you will ever make, you shouldn't be afraid to spend money on yourself. You are worth every penny you spend. Whether that’s paying for college classes, going to the doctor, hiring a nutritionist, personal trainer, or a coach. You’re worth it!
What are your dreams for one year, three years, five years from now?
What knowledge or skills do you need to get you there?
What is stopping you from investing in yourself?
If that wasn’t in the way, what would you do to invest in yourself?
What is one step you can take today to invest in yourself? (Remember, it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. It could be as simple as reading a book, listening to a podcast, or asking a friend for help.
Make today amazing because you are amazing!
