The Words You Whisper To Yourself
In the last few weeks, I have shared with you three deep and powerful energy blocks that hold you back from creating a life that means something to you on your terms. I have shared with you about limiting beliefs, assumptions, and interpretations. Each one of these shows up in your life and prevents you from playing full out in your life.
I believe the last energy block is the most powerful. Most of the time, it shows up as a whisper to yourself, and yet it speaks the loudest. You are about to step out and try something new or do something different, and just before you take that step, you hear:
You’re not smart enough.
You’re not good enough.
This one is my inner critic voice: Who do you think you are? No one is going to listen to you.
Does this sound familiar? My sisters welcome to your inner critic.
This is the voice in your head. The voice that tells you not to try, never to take a risk, always take the safe road, and to compromise your life by playing small.
Your inner critic is highly personal and holds the most intense emotional charge of any of the energy blocks. When your inner critic speaks, it is very hard not to listen. And when you do listen, you won’t even try something, because your inner critic has already told you that you will fail at it, or be hurt, or be embarrassed…the list goes on.
If you have been around me for any time, you know that I pretty much always tell you that the first step to anything is…
Your inner critic isn’t any different.
The first step to take power from the inner critic is to be aware of it. You have to bring it out into visibility.
Think about a time recently that you were going to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new and different, but you didn't.
What stopped you? My guess is that it was your inner critic.
What does your inner critic say to you?
Many times, merely recognizing your inner critic, lessens its power. Because now you have a choice about how you want to think.
The second step is to have another thought ready when you hear your inner critic. Decide now what you would like to say when your inner critic shows up.
Here are a few examples:
Thanks, but I got this.
I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
I am good enough.
Let me lay down some truth that you may not want to hear. Your inner critic voice, it never goes away. It will always be there. You can't control whether the voice speaks to you or not, but you can control whether or not you listen to it.
If you take away only one thing from this blog today, it is this:
Your inner critic is only part of who you are, and it is not your whole identity.
Look at what your inner critic is saying. Think about all the things you've wanted to do but haven't.
What was your inner critic saying?
Write it down. Write them all down. You can add items as they come up.
Remember, the first step is AWARENESS!
