The everyday mundane of life.



Every year people everywhere make New Year's resolutions. These resolutions filled by the hope of immediate and significant life change. Let's be honest. The reality of it is that no one can quit smoking, become slim and healthy, or get out of financial debt in one single moment of resolve. Rarely do we give up our bad habits or make a change in our lives as the old year gave way to the new.


Did you know that January 17 is called Ditch New Year's Resolution Day because it is a popular thought to be the day when a large number of people abandon their New Year's Resolutions? In just a few weeks after the start of the new year, when everyone is feeling on fire and ready to tackle making themselves and their lives better, their fire burns out, and the quest for a better life is gone.


Maybe you’ve found yourself in this place this year or in years past. I know I have. See when we make up our minds to do something like quit smoking, going to the gym, eating healthier, getting out of debt, (or insert your goal here__________ ) the expectation is that is happening right away. We are looking for big dramatic moments of change. Again, we live in a microwave society where we want what we want, and we want it now.


Change is something that doesn't just happen. You don't just wake up after the turn of the calendar to a new year and just quit smoking, or overeating, or overspending or whatever you are trying to do. I believe this is why people quit. You're day three into your new fitness plan, and you haven't lost any weight. You wonder why you're not losing weight. You get discouraged, and you quit.


What we need to understand is that change happens in more of a mundane process than a series of dramatic events. When we endeavor to change our hearts and lives, that change is a process, and that process takes place in the everyday mundane of life.


Rather than looking for the big dramatic moments, look for the little moments and the small-change that meets you there.
