Own Your Happiness
This weekend we celebrated my brother-in-law's birthday with a surprise birthday party. He loves jazz, so we went in with his wife and hired a jazz quartet. They were phenomenal.
Not only did I listen to them play, but I watched them as well. Let me tell you; they had smiles on their faces the entire night. You could physically see how much joy playing music brought them.
Seeing how much joy they had while they played got me thinking. How was it that it was a Saturday night, away from their families, in a stranger's house playing for a small group of people brought them so much joy? Yes, they were getting paid, but it wasn't that much.
They owned their happiness. In spite of it being the weekend and missing time family time, they have fully committed to their craft and the joy it brought them.
How can you own your happiness?
Your happiness is a daily choice. Every day you wake up, you get to choose to be happy or not. In every situation, you can choose to be happy or not. It is up to you. Here are a few steps to help you choose happiness.
1. Tell a new story: What is your current story, and how does it make you feel? If the story your telling doesn't make you feel good, stop telling it. Tell a story that makes you feel positive and inspired. I am not telling you to lie to yourself. What I am telling you is that you have a choice about the story you tell.
If you are doing something you don't like, rather than focus on the part of the story you don't like, tell the story of why you are doing it. Maybe it's because you are finishing up school, or it's part of the broader vision for your life. You choose the story, you tell.
2. Change your thoughts, change your life: You have the power to choose the thoughts you have and how they impact you. When you control your thoughts, you will gain control over your emotions rather than allowing them to control you.
Don't ruminate over past conversations or events of the day that will only serve to still your happiness. Instead, let go of those negative thoughts and choose to think of it in a way that serves you.
3. Be grateful! I know. You are probably tired of hearing this, but it is so true. When you choose to focus on being grateful for what you have, you spend less time focusing on what you don't.
Sometimes life throws you a curveball, and it's tough to find something to be grateful for. But let me tell you. It doesn't have to be some big fabulous thing. It can be something small like a hot cup of coffee or your significant other dropping your clothes off at the cleaners.
When you create feelings of gratitude, you change the feeling in your heart.
Take a moment now to pause and reflect on your life. Remind yourself just how beautiful and precious your life is. You have been gifted something so magnificent.
