Every year for Christmas, I order my husband and me our planner for the new year. I am a big fan of the Passion Planner. I've been using it for three years. The planner comes with a sticker that says, “Just Start.” I never really thought much about the sticker. This year, placed it where I can see it every day. I have allowed the phrase to roam around in my head. I started to take notice of how often I told myself I wanted to start something but would never follow through.
At the beginning of summer, I pulled out a project I wanted to start working on, but it went untouched until a few weeks ago when I finally put it away. I've got a ton of books I want to read. I've pulled them out only to end up putting them away unread.
In all honesty, this blog post was supposed to come to you way before today. I've had it scheduled for months but kept pushing it off until now. Maybe right now is the perfect time to write it.
All of this got me thinking. What prevents us from “Just Starting”? Some people would say it’s a lack of motivation or a lack of discipline. That could be part of it. But I think there is more to it than that.
The following are a few reasons I believe prevent up from taking a step to Just Start.
1. Priorities: You want to do it, but right now, it is not a priority. I know we all get busy. Maybe you work a full-time job or go to school full-time and work a full-time job. You've got a side hustle, family, and external commitments. It is hard to find time for everything. Maybe the thing you want to start isn't a priority in this season. You’ve already got a lot on your plate-so push it to the side and decide if it’s what you want to do the next time something comes off your plate.
2. It's something you SHOULD do: How many times do you find yourself doing something because you think you should? It is difficult to get motivated to do something that you think you should do if it's not something you're committed to because you want to do it than don't do it. It's not for you, and you'll continue to push it off and beat yourself up for not doing it.
3. The elephant in the room: You know I am going to call you out. How many times have you wanted to start something, but fear and self-doubt showed up and stopped you dead in your tracks? Come on now, be honest! I know I don't have enough fingers and toes to count how many times those bullies have stopped me from starting something. Sometimes when fear and self-doubt show up, they are obvious. But other times they dress up to look like 1 & 2 above. That's the truth.
The next time you want to start something, but you find yourself feeling unmotivated or reluctant to start, ask yourself what is really going on here? If it is not a priority or something, you feel like you should do-then walk away because it's not for you.
If it's fear and self-doubt, acknowledge it but Just Start. You've got this!
What is really going on here?
What is preventing me from going all-in on this?
When I think about it how does it make me feel?
How do I want to feel about it?
What is one step I can take today to Just Start?
Has fear and self-doubt stopped you in your tracks? Have they stopped you from fully stepping into something you want to do? Trust me; I know exactly how you feel. Who better to help than someone who's experienced it herself and knows how to navigate it? That's me!
