Danger in the Comfort Zone

Webster’s Dictionary defines complacency as false security of self where one continues in a comfortable and satisfied state, despite being unaware of the potential dangers ahead, or of the shortfalls they embody.

Yes, being complacent is when you find yourself in your comfort zone. You are content with where your life, career, relationships, etc. are at. When you feel this way, you stop moving forward. You are self-satisfied and think that your life is okay. Your life is good enough rather than a great life.

What I love about the definition above is that it says you are in a comfortable and satisfied state, and unaware of the protentional danger that lies ahead. When you start to settle for a life that is good enough, you get complacent and stop doing things that move you forward.

I love this quote by Alex and Brett Harris:

"Complacency is a blight that saps energy, dulls attitudes, and causes a drain on the brain. The first symptom is satisfaction with things as they are. The second is a rejection of things as they might be. 'Good enough' becomes today's watchword and tomorrow's standard. Complacency makes people fear the unknown, mistrust the untried, and hate the new. Like water, complacent people follow the easiest course — downhill. They draw false strength from looking back."

I am not saying that you shouldn't take the time to relax and enjoy the fruits of your victory. You should take the time to celebrate the wins in your life. This is so important. But remember that what got you there isn't going to keep you there.

If you find yourself experiencing complacency, here are some steps to get you out of danger in the comfort zone.

Steps to break complacency:

1. Plan for the Future, and Make It Happen

It is easy to get caught up in the busyness of day-to-day life, and suddenly, the years have gone by, and too many opportunities have passed. Don’t let complacency steal your life. Be intentional, plan for the future, and make it happen.

2. Establish an Unbreakable Commitment to Yourself

I find it fascinating that most of us see more importance in honoring a commitment we make to others rather than ourselves. If you want anything in your life, you've got to establish an unbreakable commitment to yourself.

Make the choice that you will no longer let distractions get in the way. Make a commitment to yourself that you won't settle for good enough. Establish an unbreakable commitment to yourself that you want more for your life than just okay. You want great!

3. Be Willing to Take Risks

Nothing worth having in your life comes easy. Are you ready to take a risk to get what you want? Are you willing to leap into the unknown? Lean into the uncertainty. If you fail, that's okay. In that failure, you learned many valuable lessons that you can apply in the future.

Don’t be afraid to take risks. This could mean applying for that job you’ve always wanted but didn’t think you stood a chance at getting. It could mean going back to school to finish your degree. It could mean breaking out and starting your side hustle. Whatever it is, be willing to take risks.

4. Get Out of Your Bubble

I don't know about you, but I love my bubble. But I know that to grow, develop, and be successful in life, I've got to be willing to get out of my bubble.

Staying in your bubble causes you to miss new experiences, opinions, and interactions that help to shape your world view. Instead of getting stuck in the rut of doing the same old thing, push yourself to get out of your bubble. Take the opportunity to try something new and explore the great unknown.
