Do you feel like you are surviving rather than thriving in life?
Do you feel like the life you wanted is so far removed from where you are? You had big dreams and plans for your life but somewhere along the way things just didn’t turn out the way you thought they would? Now you’re sitting at the crossroads trying to decide what to do next.
You’re wondering how can you create a life that means something to you on your terms?
In the last two weeks, you've explored
1) Awareness which allowed you to take some time to look at your life objectively with no judgment and identify exactly where you are at. It is in that awareness that creates the foundation for change. (To read more about awareness click here.)
2) Acceptance which allowed you to see clearly “what is” and “what was” in yourself, your life, others, and situations as being perfectly ok. Accepting that where you are in exactly where you need to be. (To read more about acceptance click here.)
As you move forward, the next step to creating a life that means something to you on your terms is to take responsibility for your dreams and desires. How do you do this? Be Intentional!
There are you two ways you can Be Intentional in creating a life that means something to you on your terms.
1) Realize that your life is made up of choices
2) Have a Plan
Let’s talk choices.
Are you making the choices for your life or are you allowing others to make those choices for you?
Did you know that you have the power to choose the life you want?
1. There are two kinds of choices. Fear-based choices and Purpose-based choices.
When you chose from fear you are choosing because you don't want to hurt someone's feelings or disappoint someone. You want to avoid an argument or take the path of least resistance.
When you make choices based in fear you may feel anger, bitterness, or resentment towards yourself and others. The consequence to those fear-based choices is that you end up living a life that isn't yours.
Purpose-based choices are the choices that you make that honor you and what you want for your life. You are choosing because you want to not because you have to or feel obligated to.
Choosing on purpose means you make the choice about who you are, what you want, and the path you want to take to get there.
2) Have a plan!
Your life is just like the goals you set for yourself. When you set goals you also make a plan on how to get there.
What do you want your life to look like? When you figure that out the next step is to create a plan to get yourself there. When you have a plan you can
Be Intentional about the steps you need to take to get where you want to be.
I love the definition the Disney Institutes uses for being intentional. They define being intentional as being highly purposeful and paying particular attention to detail.
Are you paying particular attention to what you need to do to get where you want to be? Are you being highly purposeful in the next step you take?
What would it look like for you to be intentional about the steps you need to take to start creating a life that means something to you on your terms?
Where do you want to be in 1 year? 3 years? 5 years? 10 years? If that is too big to think about that’s okay. Where do you want to be 6 months from now?
Where are you now? (Remember what you discovered when you gave yourself the gift of Awareness and looked at your life objectively.)
What do you need to do to get from where you are now to where you want to be?
Identify want needs to be done to get there. Education, volunteering, relocation, finding a mentor, hiring a coach, looking for a different job. Whatever it is write it down.
Now that you’ve got it written down Be Intentional about the next steps you take. Take steps that are going to get you where you want to be.
