Watch Your Language!



Negative in.

Negative out.

You hear it with your ears.

You speak it with your mouth.

On a daily basis you are inundated with negative words. The media is negative. People are negative. Life can be negative. You can be negative. Watch your language! Watch the words that you put out into the world.


Words have tremendous power yet, you often use words that disempower you. Even more important than your words is the intention behind what you say, which gives meaning and context to your words. I am not talking about that inner critic voice that pops up. I am talking about the language you speak to yourself on a daily basis. To live to your potential, you should be aware of the words you choose.

Consider how often you say the following:

This is hard.

I’m always so busy.

I’m so stressed.

I’m struggling with…

This is all too much!

I can’t do this!

I can’t afford it!


How about these?

I have to.

I need to.

I must do…

I should…

These words convey the idea that something is beyond your control when in actuality that is the furthest thing from the truth. The only thing you can control in life is you.

Your words create your reality. The more you speak negative phrases, the more you will create a reality that reflects those negative words.

What kind of reality do you want to create?

If you speak using negative words they are like magnets attracting exactly what you don’t want. Think about it. Think back (you shouldn’t have to go too far) to something negative you said. Maybe you had to wake up early. Or, got stuck in traffic. You probably said something like, “This sucks!” What happened? It did suck!!! Right! You put those words out there and got exactly what you said.

Think about putting some positive words out there. What do you think will happen? You are still going to get exactly what you said only this time it will be something positive.

Trust me! I tried it myself.

Tuesday morning I went to CrossFit. The workout of the day (WOD) was 800m run X 4. The length of time it took you to run was the amount of time you had to rest. I have a lot of opportunity to improve my run. So when the WOD has running in it I usually approach it from the “This is going to suck” standpoint. However, I decided to approaching it more positively. As I am sprinting I am telling myself, “You’ve got this”, “This feels good”, “I like this!” Guess what? It worked!!!! I didn’t struggle with the runs and I felt great while I was running. All because of the language I was using.

What can you do to start speaking more positive? Here are some tips.


Be more mindful of what words are coming out of your mouth. What are those words saying? Something positive? Negative?


Whenever you catch yourself saying or thinking something negative, stop and REFRAME it in a positive way.


Instead of saying, “I can’t” or “I don’t know how”, get curious about it. I’m getting curious about… or let’s experiment with…


In the words of Yoda, “Try Not. Do or Do Not. There is no trying. Trying is an excuse. When you say, “I’m trying”, it translates to “I know I should but I’m not fully committed”. Which really presents a deeper issue. You have to ask yourself how committed are you to whatever it is you’re are trying to do.

Words of Encouragement

This week be mindful about the words you speak and the intention behind them. Don’t be judgmental of harsh on yourself about what you say. Just be mindful. When you hear yourself say something negative, stop yourself, and take a moment to reframe that negative into something more positive. Give yourself lots of grace and more grace. Changing this habit will not happen overnight. Just as with most things I challenge you with takes time. You are a work in progress. Remember it’s a journey not a destination.
