Be the Change!
To say that there are a lot of bad things going on in the world is an understatement. I know for myself that it can be overwhelming to watch the news and hear it all. Some days it can even seem hopeless.
I ask myself, “Where do I fit in to make the world a better place?”
The thoughts that run through my mind are endless. It is easy to feel overwhelmed.
When I think about what I can do, a lot of things come up for me. I can be a nicer person. I can volunteer in an organization. I can reduce my carbon footprint. I can recycle. I can help others in need or be a mentor. The list goes on. I am sure you get the point. How do you do it all? What makes choosing one thing over the other better. Does choosing one thing over the other make more of an impact? See what I mean? It can all be overwhelming.
Here’s a thought. What if all each of us did was be the change we want to see in the world? I know. This is so cliché and everyone is tired of hearing it. But I believe this is how we make the world a better place.
Be the change you want to see in the world. – Mahatma Gandhi
What does it mean to be the change? Here is what it doesn’t mean; if you change other people will automatically change. It doesn’t work like that. Be the change, in my opinion, means your actions and ideals are an example to someone else. If you are a parent you know exactly what I am saying. Your children mirror everything you do. The world is the same way.
As a self-leadership coach, I focus on what an individual can do to influence his/her life and the world. If you can’t lead yourself how can you expect to lead others. Here are three steps you can take to be the change.
Your thoughts influence your feelings which influence your actions. Negative thoughts equal negative actions. Positive thoughts equal positive actions. When you chose to have positive thoughts then you can view the world through a different lens. This change is view also allows you to act in ways you wouldn’t have or maybe even thought about when you were stuck in your old thought patterns. Change your thoughts equals change your life.
You’re in Control
What you feel and how you feel it are totally up to you. You are in control of your thoughts and how you react to them. You choose how you react (negative) or respond (positive) to any situation.
Forgive and Let Go
When you don’t forgive people, you allow them to have control over your life. You can’t fight evil with evil. Choose to love and not hate. Again, you are in control of how you see things. When you choose to forgive, and let go you release yourself from bondage. When you release yourself from bondage you allow yourself to move forward.
With each one of these steps, you are choosing to be the change. The only person you can change is yourself. When others see you and the positive energy you resonate with they will want to be that change.
Each day, all you can do is what YOU can do.
Today, I choose to be the change. I choose to respond and not react. Today, and every day, I choose to love and not hate. To help and not hurt. To speak life and not death. Today, I choose to do my part. What about you? Will you choose today to be the change?
Words of Encouragement
I am a huge advocate of change your thoughts change your life. Every day you wake up you have the power to choose how you will think, feel, and act. Don’t let society or other people dictate your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Take authority over yourself. When you make the choice, other people will see your positive energy and want what you’ve got.
