YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!
Recently, I told my daughter she was beautiful. When I did, I got reminded that she was much more than beautiful. I was confused! When did telling someone they were beautiful become such a bad thing?
As I put together this blog, the first thing I wanted to do was look up the definition of beautiful. Merriam-Webster defines beautiful as 1) having qualities of beauty and 2) generally pleasing. When I looked up this definition there wasn’t an image of a woman next to it. There were just words. Is it safe to say that society and the media have ruined this word and the context in which we use it?
As women, we have objectified. The media has done a magnificent job defining what a “beautiful” woman is while making the rest of us feel like the ugly ducklings. For more years than we can all count, girls have been hearing the message that how they look is the priority. They have heard the silent message that who they are and what they are worth is tied up in how they look.
Here are a couple startling statistics:
72% of girls feel “tremendous pressure” to be beautiful (Girl Scouts of America)
Only 4% of girls worldwide believe they are beautiful (Girl Scouts of America).
These statistics break my heart. Things must change!!!!
When is enough, enough? I say NOW!!! It is time we all draw a line in the sand and say we’ve had enough. We’ve had enough of society and the media telling us what beautiful is.
Today, I stand and say, “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!!” I don’t care what you think about yourself, I say, “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!” I don’t care if you have short or long hair, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL! I don’t care if you are tall or short, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL! I don’t care if you are white, black, brown, purple, green, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL because you are YOU!!!
That day I told my daughter she was beautiful it had nothing to do with her looks. The beauty that I saw in her was the woman she was and was growing into. The beauty I saw in her was the woman who was walking her journey every day. The beauty I saw was the woman who was learning about herself through life’s experiences. The beauty I saw was the woman who regardless of what life was throwing at her she was standing tall and weathering the storm.
This is the same beauty I see in each of you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are unique. You have been created just as you are because there is a plan and purpose for your life. Don’t let society or the media make you think anything different. It is time for you to stand in your power, stand in who you are, and who you were created to be and share your gifts with the world.
Look in the mirror and say, “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!” Turn to your girlfriend and tell her, “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!” Turn to your daughter and tell her, “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!”
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL because you are YOU!!!!
We can each craft our own definition of the word beautiful. What does "beautiful" mean to you? I would love to hear!
